The Hernando Community Coalition in partnership with Hernando County Schools and the YMCA, are implementing the Friday Night Done Right Campaign. The campaign focuses on things teens would prefer to do on a Friday Night rather than drink or do drugs. In the winter of 2012, the coalition completed a Social Norming Survey (TeeNS Survey) to learn more youth use, behaviors, and perceptions surrounding alcohol and other drug use. Data revealed that perceptions in Hernando County need to change amongst Hernando youth. For instance, only 3% of middle school students and 8% of high school students “typically” drink alcohol when socializing, however students perceive much higher rates of drinking among their peers. The campaign is working to change misconceptions about alcohol and other drug use and promote positive messages in the schools and community. As part of the campaign, alcohol and drug free events are occurring for Hernando youth to participate in.
