Responsible Vendor TrainingThe RVT class works to teach employees, managers, and owners of establishments that sell alcohol how to keep it out of the hands of minors and not sell alcohol to obviously intoxicated persons. It is important that alcohol vendors do their part to help keep communities safe.

By participating in the class, alcohol vendors will be equipped with the knowledge needed to avoid arrest, fines, and jail time for alcohol violations. RVT is an important tool for communities. The program is multi-faceted, and in order to be effective we believe requires a comprehensive approach. The Steps for successful implementation of the RVT Program require the participation of different sectors in your community. Utilizing the partnerships in your community coalition is an effective way to accomplish a successful program.

RVT/Compliance Check Diversion Program a Success in Hernando County!
Components to the Program:
Program Outcomes:
In Hernando County, Law Enforcement has conducted over 300 compliance checks since 2011. Since then, none of the clerks 50 clerks that have been caught selling alcohol to youth, who have all taken the Responsible Vendor Training have reoffended.
Additionally, No stores that have failed a compliance check, after their first failure and introduction to the RVT course, have reoffended. Many stores, upon 3 to 4 checks have never failed. Some stores may have passed first 2 checks, then failed their third, and have not failed again since sending their employing to RVT and talking with Law Enforcement. Some stores, upon a failure, have voluntarily sent all of the their employees to the training. For instance, Sunny’s BBQ has held trainings in-house for RVT yearly.
To date, roughly 250 Hernando alcohol sellers, servers, and festival employees have taken the RVT course. All classes scored have displayed increase in knowledge from pre to post test and participants overwhelming have found the course “very useful”.

Components to the Program:
- Quarterly compliance checks conducted by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and the Brooksville Police Department to see if alcohol vendors are selling to minors.
- Diversion of those caught selling alcohol to minors - The State’s Attorney proposed, in lieu of the $500 fine, it become mandatory that the counter staff who sell to minors attend a training program. By participating in training, the court would waive the fee and there would be no arrests on their record.
- Responsible Vendor Training- The central concepts for either off or onsite sales include: Recognition of fake IDs; Acceptable forms of identification; Prevention of service to minors; Laws and liability concerns related to selling to underage or intoxicated customers; and Advice on how to handle disorderly, intoxicated customers.
