Know The Law

The HCC, in partnership with Hernando County Schools and the Hernando County Sheriff Office, is implementing Know the Law in schools and the community.

The campaign works to teach youth and parents a better understanding of the law to avert youth from unlawful behavior. Understanding alcohol and drug laws is important, being arrested for a misdemeanor or a felony can greatly affect a youth’s life.

To receive a booklet of alcohol and other drug laws, or to schedule a presentation, call the HCC at 352-596-8000.
HCSO School Resource Officers presented Know the Law to over 2,000 students in the 2020-2021 School Year!!

Example - Alcohol Laws
You must be 21 years or older to drink alcohol. If you are under 21, it is illegal to attempt to purchase alcohol. Once you receive a license, you cannot refuse a drug test, if you do, your license will be suspended. It is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol level of .08 if you are of legal drinking age and .02 if you are under 21. A DUI stays on your record for 75 years.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Open House Parties- Parties where alcohol or drugs are served to underage people will result in a 2nd degree misdemeanor for adult in charge.  It is a 1st degree misdemeanor if a person (adult) allows a house party for a 2nd time, or if a minor who consumed alcohol is seriously injured or killed.
  • Alcohol on School Grounds- Suspension and Expulsion can result if you possess, drink, sell or give out alcohol on school grounds. In Addition to facing criminal charges, possession results in suspension of driving for at least 6 months. If you reoffend, your license is suspended for 2 years.
